SeaGrown is the UK’s first open water seaweed farming company. This means we will soon be able to sustainably produce large quantities of seaweed, a crop which is highly beneficial to the marine environment and the wider terrestrial environment as it absorbs huge amounts of carbon from the atmosphere as it grows.

We require no power, fresh water, chemicals, pesticides or even land to grow this extremely versatile biomass.

• What are your aspirations and plans for the future?: In the near future we plan to take offshore seaweed farming to commercial scale and start producing increasing amounts of sustainable biomass for industrial use. Our farm is located in the North Sea off the Yorkshire coast.
• What types of projects are you interested in working on through Future Fashion Factory?: SeaGrown is very interested in investigating seaweed-based fabrics. These fabrics would be highly sustainable and it is believed that previous studies have identified anti-microbial and even fire retardant properties, so they may lend themselves to a variety of uses. We would be keen to partner with materials designers, manufacturers and fashion designers to take seaweed-based fabrics to the UK market and worldwide.
