Sabine Lettmann

 Designers

My work as a Fashion Designer includes development and implementation of design concepts as well as the supervision of productions for my own label or other companies. I specialized in sustainable practices and spend regular time on research and industry development in terms of new materials, technologies, work ways or other interdisciplinary innovations.

In addition to my work in design I started to work in consulting in 2011. Since then I have been working with companies of different sizes and in different areas of consulting, mainly to support brands in finding their individual approach to a more sustainable work way in general, but also in design and production.

Working as a Senior Lecturer at Birmingham City University I teach students with a broader point of view on various levels in fashion and costume design and help them to strengthen their personal skills to step well prepared into industry.

Strengths in particular are

  • Circular design concept development with implementation of various strategies including zero waste design, waste prevention and alternative consumption.
  • Responsible design development related to design thinking processes.
  • Sourcing of diverse sustainable and innovative materials including national and European suppliers.
  • Interdisciplinary thinking and collaboration development for fashion projects with a social design focus as a business model.
  • Consulting of SMEs in transforming their businesses to become more sustainable in general.
  • Network to suppliers and academic institutions in Europe.

  • What are your aspirations and plans for the future?: Besides developing my own designs I am interested in intensifying my research and consulting in circular economy related fashion and textile projects, especially on an interdisciplinary basis.
  • What types of projects are you interested in working on through Future Fashion Factory?: What types of projects are you interested in working on through Future Fashion Factory? I would be interested in helping SMEs in their transition to create business models based on circular economy either on a step by step approach or from scratch. Within this, the application of design thinking methods with the user/customer at its centre, as a more mindful development will be part of the way products are designed, value is added and the risk of early disposal can be reduced in first place. My interested lies furthermore in intensifying a UK wide network of suppliers and companies to ease the sourcing of alternative materials. This can relate to minimizing waste but also to empower and strengthen the UK production possibilities, national suppliers as well as businesses at entrepreneurial stage. With a further background in HE teaching I would also be interested in setting up educational workshops or projects which can help to accelerate a healthy growth of the UK fashion industry focusing on integrative and holistic systems in general.
