BlueGene Technologies Ltd

 Dyeing, Printing & Coloration

Bluegene Technologies is an early-stage Biotechnology company founded to commercialise the biological production of natural, bioinspired indigo dyes for the textile industry. Our vision is to replace the existing outdated, polluting industrial technologies for production of dyes and chemicals, which rely on toxic petrochemical inputs, with efficient microbial bioconversions that use low-cost biorenewable feedstocks and produce no toxic wastes. 21st Century green chemistry solutions for the textile industry.

Bluegene’s expertise in microbial metabolism, bioconversions and bioremediation of toxic industrial wastes enables us to dissect the textile industry’s existing manufacturing processes – use of raw materials and end-products, to understand the environmental impact and consequences of present industry design and practices. As such we are able to raise awareness among textile designers and manufacturers of the potential consequences of using non-sustainable processes and of the environmental fate of non-biodegradable synthetics or natural/synthetic blends – in both new and traditional fabrics.

  • What are your aspirations and plans for the future?: Bluegene wishes to encourage the use of natural dyes in the high-value textile manufacture and fashion industries through its novel range of bio-produced indigo dyes and thereby hopes to stimulate a revival of the traditional indigo dyeing techniques in the UK by textile producers and dyers. We are also looking to test our dyes on novel materials such as carbon-nanofibre/composites, the bacterial celluloses and alternative biorenewable plant-fibre textiles, which are likely to play increasing roles in sustainability in the near future.
  • What types of projects are you interested in working on through Future Fashion Factory?: Collaborative innovation/testing the use and suitability of bioindigo dyes on novel fabric materials such as, carbon nanofibers, bacterial celluloses and alternative plant fibres, e.g pineapple. Collaborative testing of textile / yarn-dyeing for high-value fashion garments - wool and silk. Sustainability and pollution-free manufacturing within the entire textile value chain.
