Research Afternoon: Digitisation and Communication of Fabric Tactile Properties

19 March, 2020 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Professor Ningtao Mao (University of Leeds) will speak at this dedicated event for fashion and textile researchers at Manchester Fashion Institute.

Fabric touch feel has been widely evaluated subjectively by a panel of experts/trained users. It is desirable to digitise fabric tactile properties using an objective system and communicate fabric tactile qualities with a universal language among engineers, designers, manufacturers, retailers and consumers in fashion supply chain, assisted with haptic sensory tools. This talk will give an overview of the ongoing work within the Future Fashion Factory project on objective quantification and digital communication of fabric tactile properties.

Ningtao Mao is Professor of Fibre and Textile Technology at the University of Leeds.  His research interests are focused on engineering design of functional fabrics and clothing as well as the characterisation, digitisation and digitalisation of fabric tactile and drape properties. As part of the Future Fashion Factory R&D programme, he is leading research into digital communication of the aesthetic properties of fabric.
